The EISCAT Scientific Association operates and maintains high-power incoherent scatter radar systems and an ionospheric heater in northern Fenno-Scandinavia and on Svalbard. The next generation facility, EISCAT_3D, is in the final installation phase and large-scale tests and commissioning will begin in 2024. The new system will eventually replace the two older UHF and VHF radar systems on the mainland.
We are now seeking to recruit an experienced Radar Systems Engineer to join our development and engineering team at the EISCAT Headquarters in Kiruna, Sweden.
The applicant should possess at least a master’s degree (or equivalent) in electronic engineering or equivalent fields and have demonstrated experience in radar and RF technology, especially at frequencies below 1 GHz. Experience in phased array technology, including scientific programming of modular radar systems, would be advantageous.
As the EISCAT systems are complex with many building blocks including RF parts like antennas, cables, solid-state power amplifiers, and highly competent signal processing stages with a vast network infrastructure including an extremely precise timing system, the applicant should have a very good systems engineering background, and be able to develop a detailed understanding of the system architecture and its components. Knowledge of at least the basic electronics and RF measurement instruments like oscilloscopes, spectrum and two-port network analysers is essential. Prior experience with older radar technologies such as waveguides and high-power klystron amplifiers would be a bonus.
Since our team at EISCAT has designed and programmed its own one-chip computer control systems and interface logic, experience with working with electronic CAD and programming of small computers for interfacing will be advantageous. The control and signal processing computers in the EISCAT systems are running Linux and good understanding and prior usage of Linux/Unix is necessary.
The Radar Systems Engineer will, after an initial probationary period, be employed permanently until further notice. The employment terms are comparable to Swedish state employment rules. The affiliation is with EISCAT Headquarters in Kiruna, Sweden and the work location will also be in Kiruna. At times, extensive periods of fieldwork are expected at the different EISCAT sites. The position is an extension of our development and engineering team, and we envisage a start date latest around April 2024.
For further details about the position, please contact Director Dr Axel Steuwer, at EISCAT (contact details on our website).
Send your application latest 10 January 2024. Applications will be treated in confidence. Recruitment updates will be posted on the EISCAT website. Visa mindre

The implementation phase started 1 September 2017 and the system will be ready for use in 2021. This will be a varied role primarily concerned with the development and maintenance of the web interface to EISCAT3D which will be used for all day to day operations by both the users and the system operators. As the EISCAT3D system will be remotely operated this role also covers the development and maintenance of PC or tablet applications to allow remote system maintenance tasks such as powering on and off the system and calibration. EISCAT3D will operate for decades so the role would suit someone familiar with balancing features and dependencies against maintenance costs.

EISCAT3D will be operational in 2021 and the successful applicant will have the freedom to design and implement these applications from scratch.

Main Duties:
Development and maintenance of the user facing software of the E3D system. This will include websites for both users and system operators, and applications for system maintenance.

Required skills and experience:
- Familiarity with web technologies
- GUI application development using an open source toolkit
- Linux
- Documentation

Desired skills and experience:
- Security
- Experience with long established code bases
- Mobile device application development
